The Pharmaceuticals Industry

The Pharmaceutical IndustryPMI provides the pharmaceutical industry with testing equipment and analytical services for a wide variety of applications, particularly filtration and separation applications. The primary instruments of interest to the pharmaceutical industry are the Porosimeter, BET Sorptometer, and the ESA.

Pharmaceuticals industry professionals have great interest in knowing and controlling the rate of dissolution of a tablet. The rate of dissolution is a function of total surface area, a property characterized by many of PMI's instruments. The PMI Mercury Porosimeter, BET Sorptometer, Liquisorb Sorptometer, and ESA all measure various types of surface area. The most thorough and in-depth surface area analysis is performed by the BET Sorptometer. The BET Sorptometer offers single point and multi-point surface area, and performs adsorption and desorption isotherms. Additionally, the ESA is an excellent instrument for surface area for quality control purposes. While the ESA does not perform as in-depth of an analysis -- it measures only the external surface area -- its test length of less than five minutes makes it appropriate for a QC environment.

Another pharmaceutical application for PMI Instruments is in-situ drug delivery systems. To effectively design and implement these systems, the porosity of the material used to selectively deliver and release drugs needs to be understood and controlled. Again, PMI's BET Sorptometer provides the pharmaceutical company with this information, including total pore volume, pore size distribution, mean pore size, surface area, and chemisorption.

The quantity of water a tablet or drug can absorb under different conditions is a third application. The Liquisorb Sorptometer is direct test for this property. The Liquisorb Sorptometer predicts the "liquid vapor" adsorption of the drug and how the adsorption affects the drug in different environments.
